A competency is the required combination of knowledge, skills and behavior that is critical for both organizational and employee success. Competency Profiles are collections of individual, global and functional competencies that describe the expectations of a given job.
Competencies can be either assigned directly to an employee or it can be inherited from Job.
When an employee has particular qualifications, it will become skill of employee.
Example : knowledge of languages, technical certifications
When the qualification is assigned to a position, then it will become requirement.
Example : SAP FI consultant required means,   employee/resource is required with SAP FI skill.
Competency is an another term for the object Qualification.
Scale: Scale is the proficiency level measurement of an employee in each qualification.
Competencies consists of two scale types:

  • Quantitative Scale
  • Ex: Rating between 1-10
  • Qualitative Scale
  • Ex:1-Bad, 2-Medium, 3-Good

 


Uses of Competency Management

  • Once can track the skills acquired by the employee.
  • Based on the skills acquired, searching for the appropriate resources will be easier.
  • Competency management can be used for identifying Career Planning and Succession Planning opportunities.
  • Development needs and training suggestions, effective Job Architecture design allows for greatly simplified job, competency and qualification profile management.
  • All requirements can be defined on multiple levels from the Functional Area to the Job Family, Job and Position.
  • This information is also cascaded down from every parent to every child object allowing for one click maintenance of position requirements over an entire Functional Area.

Components of Competency Management

Qualifications consists of:

  • Qualification Catalog
  • Qualification Group
  • Qualification
  • Proficiencies

Qualification Catalog: The qualifications catalog contains all the qualifications that are of interest to an employer. The qualifications catalog comprises qualification groups and qualifications.
Qualification Group: Qualification groups are used to structure the qualifications catalog. Qualification groups can contain both qualifications and further qualification groups. You must assign each qualification group a proficiency scale.
Qualification: Qualifications can include further qualifications. You cannot insert a qualification directly under the root node of the catalog. You have to create a qualification below qualification group.
You can enter a text to describe the proficiencies for each qualification in more detail. The proficiency descriptions of the corresponding qualification group are defaulted; otherwise, the proficiency descriptions of the corresponding scale are defaulted. You can overwrite these defaults as required.
These qualifications can have depreciation meter.
Ex: Let SAP HR certificate be a qualification. Then you can define 1 year as the validity of this certification. After this period, employee may have to get the certification once again.
Proficiencies: Proficiency describes the comfort level in each qualification. Qualifications inherit proficiency from qualification group.

  • Now create Qualification group and qualifications
  • Create Qualification group.

You can assign qualification to job/position as well. If it is assigned to the Job, then we can default the competency to the employee
