how to check your computer's IP in Windows

An IP address or Internet protocol address is a numerical label used in networks to identify and locate network devices, from computers to smartphones, to printers and other devices. An IP address can be useful information, especially when you want to set up a home router or when you want to connect to other devices on the network. But how do you check your computer’s IP in Windows? In this guide, we’ll show you eight methods that work on Windows 10, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1:

The information provided in this guide applies to all modern Windows operating systems: Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7. To simplify matters, we use screenshots taken mainly in Windows 10.

1. How to find the computer’s IP address from the command line (all versions of Windows)

Open a command prompt or press the Windows + R , then type in the new window that appears, cmd, then in next window type ipconfig and press Enter . This command displays a list of all network adapters (both Ethernet and wireless) found on a Windows computer and displays detailed information about each of them.

You see both the IPv4 address and the IPv6 address for each network adapter .

To learn more about the parameters accepted by the ipconfig command and what each of them does, run the ipconfig / command .

2. How to check your computer’s IP in the Settings application (Windows 10)

If you’re using Windows 10, open the Settings app. Go to Network and Internet . A list of network related settings and categories will be displayed. If you are connected to a wireless network, select Wi-Fi in the column on the left and then, on the right, click or select the name of the network you are connected to.

A long list of properties is displayed. Scroll down until you find the IPv6 and IPv4 address fields, highlighted below.

3. How to find your computer’s IP in Control Panel (all versions of Windows)

Another method that does not require the use of a command is to use the Network and Sharing Center . To access it, open the Control Panel and go to Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center . Then click the Change network adapter settings link  on the left.

The Network Connections window opens , listing the network adapters installed on your computer, including virtual adapters used by VPN services or virtualization applications. Double-click the network adapter to check the IP address.

This action opens the Status window for this adapter. Click or tap the Details button to view a series of details about this network adapter, including its IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

Scroll through the list of details until you find the IPv4 and IPv6 address fields highlighted below.

4. How to check your computer’s IP in PowerShell (all versions of Windows)

PowerShell is a tool similar to the command line, but it is even more efficient and allows you to work with more elements that make up Windows. PowerShell has two commands that you can use to find the IPv4 and IPv6 address of the network adapter. The first is gip . Type it in PowerShell and then press Enter . The command starts displaying several details about each network adapter, including their IP addresses.

Another command that returns the same results is the Get-NetIPConfiguration configuration . Type the command, press Enter , and then search for the information you want.

5. How to check your computer’s IP address in Task Manager (Windows 10 and Windows 8.1)

If you are using Windows 10 or Windows 8.1, start Task Manager. If the Manager starts in the compact view, which displays only open applications, click “More details” . Then select the Performance tab and look for the network card. If you’re connected to a wireless network, click Wi-Fi. On the right you can see the IPv6 and IPv4 addresses.
